Players can freely join or leave each other's games at anytime, or choose to play in the full single-player mode. These features, along with a rich and deep fiction that touches upon the mysteries buried beneath the surface of a danger-filled planet, combine to form a breakthrough experience that challenges the conventions of modern shooters.

Players can choose from one of four distinct characters and earn experience and gain proficiency in a number of specialties as they do battle with enemies. Upgrades can be invested in a wide variety of special abilities, allowing players to create a fully customized character that is tailored to their playing style.

Beat It Once? Beat It Again!
Even after you beat the game once you have reason to keep going. There are three playthroughs available in Borderlands. Playthrough 1, which is what the game starts out as, Playthrough 2, which is available after you beat the game, and Playthrough 2-1/2, which occurs after you beat Playthrough 2. With each increase in Playthrough, the enemies get harder, the loot better, and the action more exciting. Playthrough 2 allows you to redo every mission in the game as if starting over (though your character still has all of his/her gear, stats, etc). Playthrough 2.5 (2-1/2) on the other hand, does not restart the game, so you are unable to redo missions.
